Round 2 - (Singles)
TORAY Pan Pacific Open 30 January 2002
MARTINA HINGIS DEFEATED MARLENE WEINGARTNER 6-1, 6-2
Q: Martina, was there any fatigue left after Melbourne and if so, did that
contribute to you maybe losing focus in the second set today?
MARTINA HINGIS: Well, I think that I have had plenty of rest by now. I mean, I got here Sunday night already and today is Wednesday. So, that wouldn?t be the excuse. There was no time difference or nothing. I think I played very well, I started off very well and she is not a player that if you just let go a little bit. . . I mean she is right back in the game. She made the quarterfinals in Melbourne as well, so she has been playing very well at this point. I am very satisfied with my game.
Q: You used to be ranked No. 1 and now you are ranked fourth, is there difference
in terms of pressure?
MARTINA HINGIS: Well, it depends on where I play. I mean at the grand slams, nobody expected me to get into the finals and play as well as I did. I am still feeling the pressure that I put on myself and you want to do even better than before, because you are used to being No. 1. So, you want to gain that back. So, the motivation and everything is there and I hope I can get back there soon again.
Q: You said that you are not really feeling it physically after Melbourne,
but how emotionally draining was that to play so well and get so close and then
to just lose out?
MARTINA HINGIS: It is maybe mentally a little bit more the first couple of days. The day, the same day, and then the next day, you are in the plane and you have so much time to think about what happened. That was maybe a little harder. But now, I have had a few players say bad luck, but keep fighting and the next one will be yours. It was nice and now I am just trying to get back into it. I am playing very well and have no reason to be disappointed, because if I play as good as I did today, I think that I can win here and go on and have more wins and victories at tournaments.
Q: How would you rate your chances for this tournament?
MARTINA HINGIS: Well, like I said, I think that I have a very good chance of winning here. It probably has been six or seven times that I have already played here, half of it I have won and have made finals the other two times. So, I think that I can be very satisfied with my performance here and seated No 1. my expectations, as everyone else?s too, are the same.
